The Cemetery Restoration Department is taking comments from the public on the proposed Tribal Cemetery Code and will consider your comments when they come in.  You shall have 60 days from the date of this publication to submit written comments by either hard copy or by electronic transmission to:

FOR IMMEDIATE MEDIA RELEASE: 

JUNE 7, 2022 

[New Town, ND 5:00 pm] The identification of the deceased individual recovered from Lake Sakakawea on Saturday June 4, 2022 is confirmed as Charles Hines Bearstail, who was reported missing to Three Affiliated Tribes Law Enforcement on April 27, 2022. Mr. Bearstail’s immediate family has been notified. 

On behalf of the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation, and all the search personnel involved during this incident response, the Incident Commanders for the Charles Bearstail Search Operation would like to extend everyone’s sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Bearstail during this immensely difficult time. 

We would like to state our appreciation to all the many committed volunteers from 26 Local, Tribal, County, State, Federal Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations from North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin who came together in support of Mr. Bearstail and his family. The personnel working hard to find Mr. Bearstail collectively put in thousands of man hours covering a 175 square mile search area by land, water, and air over 39 days until Mr. Bearstail was recovered this past weekend. We also would like to acknowledge the support of local community members who assisted the search operation with providing meals, fuel, lodging, and helping to distribute the Missing Person’s Advisory Flyer for Mr. Bearstail on a regular basis. 

Mr. Bearstail’s cause and manner of death is pending investigation. No further information is being released at this time.

FOR IMMEDIATE MEDIA RELEASE: 

JUNE 4, 2022 

[New Town, ND 5:45 pm] On Saturday, June 4, 2022 around 11:10 am, Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office received information via 9-1-1 call that a possible deceased human was found in the water against the shoreline on Lake Sakakawea by a boater out fishing. 

Three Affiliated Tribes Law Enforcement, MHA Emergency Operations Center, New Town Volunteer Fire Department, and Three Affiliated Tribes Fish and Wildlife Division were dispatched and responded. 

A Three Affiliated Tribes Police Officer and a Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff secured the scene immediately. 

Per Three Affiliated Tribes Law Enforcement Detective Division protocols, the Minot Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Satellite Office and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Special Agent Division were also notified. 

Additional personnel from the Three Affiliated Tribes Law Enforcement, New Town Volunteer Fire Department, Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office, and an FBI Agent responded to the reported location along the east lake shoreline, about 2.8 miles south of the Four Bears Bridge. 

New Town Volunteer Fire Department facilitated the recovery of a deceased individual’s body from the lake to be transferred to a nearby docking area, where the body was then transported by Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office to the North Dakota State Forensic Examiner’s Office in Bismarck, ND. 

Confirmation of identification and cause of death of the deceased individual is pending investigation. This is an active investigation led by the Three Affiliated Tribes Detective Division.
